If I had a million dollars
Friday, August 28th, 2009The other night I was laying in bed trying to figure out what it is I want to do with my life when I remembered that clip from the movie “Office Space” where Peter asks Lawrence what he would do if he had a million dollars. Because whatever you would do if you had a million dollars is what you should do for a living. (I tried to find the clip online, but I could only find a partial clip with Lawrence saying what he would do, and that didn’t seem appropriate without the full explanation.) It made me think about what I would do if I had a million dollars. While my answers to that question aren’t as funny as Peter or Lawrence answers, they are mine. And maybe by putting them writing, they might move from a mere thought to a reality one day.
If I had an unlimited income I would study to become a master craftsman. I have always wanted to learn how to design and build furniture and make cabinets and eventually build my fabulous timber frame home. There is a beautiful school in Maine that I would go to and study the art of furniture design. I would go and spend time in Louisiana with my Uncle Carl and my cousin Jonathan who both are absolutely talented craftsmen. I remember when I was a little girl I watched my uncle make the most ornate beautiful gingerbread trim for our house. I’ve loved the thought of taking raw wood and turning in to a piece of art ever since then. Some of my happiest times are working with my dad making things. Even now that I’m 29 years old, I still love being his helper. Even if it is making a temporary platform for the dock at the lake, I love every minute of it. I love the smell of freshly cut wood, the feel of sawdust on my hands, taking random pieces of wood and giving them a purpose. Maybe one day I’ll just step out there and follow this dream, with or without the million dollars.
I would also buy a date with Gerard Butler if I had a million dollars.
